CAF has received an official Bid from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to Host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the premier international football tournament in Africa and features the top national teams from across the continent. The tournament has been held since 1957, with Egypt winning the most titles.
Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda have teamed up to make a joint bid to host the 2027 AFCON. This marks the first time that three nations have come together to bid for the tournament. The bid was officially submitted to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on April 12, 2023.
The East African trio will face competition from three other nations – Algeria, Botswana, and Egypt – who have also expressed interest in hosting the tournament. CAF will conduct inspection visits to each of the six bidding countries between June 1 and July 15 to assess their infrastructure, facilities, and overall readiness to host the tournament.
The host nation(s) for the 2027 AFCON will be announced by CAF at its Executive Committee meeting in September 2023. If Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda are selected, it will be the first time that any of the three nations have hosted the tournament.
The 2027 AFCON is expected to feature 24 teams, up from the current format of 16 teams. This means that the host nation(s) will need to have the capacity to host a larger number of matches and accommodate more teams and fans.
