Following the untimely demise of business mogul and rally driver Rajiv Ruparelia in a motor accident during the early hours of Saturday morning, family, friends, and the motorsport community continue to pay tribute to his life and legacy.
Rajiv was not only at the helm of a successful business empire but also deeply passionate about motorsport—a passion he actively pursued over a six-year rallying career.
He began his rally journey six years ago under the Central Motor Club, where he also served as chairman. His influence on the sport went beyond the track, offering financial support and strategic advice aimed at growing and professionalizing the sport.
Despite his demanding business schedule, Rajiv remained an active competitor. Club vice president Saeed Kakeeto recounted his contributions, saying, “He came up with ideas to commercialize motorsport beyond being a driver. He introduced membership ranges which attracted high-profile members.”
Kakeeto also highlighted some of Rajiv’s memorable moments in the sport. “He had two iconic races, including one in Mbarara where he chased down Lwakataka, but his car broke down with just a few stages left,” he recalled.
The motorsport fraternity is expected to lead processions as they pay their final respects to Rajiv.
His body will be cremated in a Hindu ceremony at Lugogo tomorrow afternoon. He is survived by a daughter.
