Kampala Queens Football Club have officially been crowned the 2024/25 Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League champions.
The crowning took place on Tuesday, June 3, following a 1-1 draw against She Maroons in their final match of the season at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
Although the Queens of Soccer had mathematically secured the championship with three games to spare, they capped off a dominant campaign with a spirited performance.
This triumph marks the club’s second league title, having first won it in the 2022/23 season.
Formed in 2016 after FUFA President Moses Magogo acquired Gaddafi Integrated Academy, Kampala Queens have steadily evolved into a powerhouse.
This season, they outclassed all 11 other teams, finishing with 49 points from 22 games; four clear of defending champions Kawempe Muslim who came second.
The campaign saw Kampala Queens win 14 matches, draw seven, and lose just once at the hands of Kawempe.
Their defensive solidity and attacking discipline were evident in their goal statistics, having scored 35 goals and conceded only 7.
Initially coached by Charles Ayiekoh before Ethiopian tactician Firew Asefa Hailegebreal took charge midway through the first round, the team has now earned the honour of representing Uganda at the CECAFA Zone qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League later this year.
Tuesday’s encounter was largely ceremonial but provided ample drama.
Star midfielder Shamirah Nalugya opened the scoring for the champions in the 28th minute, converting a penalty with trademark composure.
She Maroons equalised in the 71st minute through Phionah Atono to secure a draw.
The result extended Kampala Queens’ winless run to four matches, but it had no impact on their title credentials.
The final whistle triggered scenes of celebration, followed by a colourful trophy presentation ceremony.
FUFA’s 3rd Vice President, Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, presided over the crowning ceremony, flanked by key officials from title sponsors Finance Trust Bank and Women’s Football Association representative Aminah Bukenya.
Shamirah Nalugya was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), having scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 21 appearances.
She narrowly beat her teammate Zainah Nandede and goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro to the top individual honour.
Nakaziro walked away with the Golden Glove after keeping an impressive 15 clean sheets in 19 appearances.
The Golden Boot went to Lady Doves midfielder Resty Kobusobozi, who netted 17 goals across the season. Her club also claimed the Fair Play Award.
