SC Villa have officially unveiled Zeljko Kovacevic as their new head coach, further strengthening the club’s growing love affair with Serbian tacticians to steer their project.
Kovacevic’s arrival comes just days after the abrupt and brief stint of Nemanja Milincic, who left without managing a single competitive match, a move that left many Villa faithful in disbelief.
Kovacevic now becomes the fifth Serbian to take charge of Uganda’s record league champions, following in the footsteps of Milutin “Micho” Sredojević, Dusan Stojanovic, Srdjan Zivojnov, and Nemanja Milincic.
Micho, who laid the foundation for his compatriots and continues to play a hand in subsequent appointments, remains a legend at Villa Park after guiding the club to league and cup glory in the early 2000s.
Stojanovic famously led the Jogoo to their most recent Uganda Premier League title in the 2023/24 season, ending a long wait and restoring their dominance. Zivojnov brought a modern, high-pressing approach but never won a trophy.
Meanwhile, last season saw Morley Byekwaso take charge of the record Uganda Premier League champions. He left at the end of the campaign, after Villa finished sixth with 45 points.
At 43, Kovacevic brings a wealth of experience from various clubs across the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Known for his defensive discipline and quick transitions, he is expected to mold Villa into a cohesive, competitive force ready to regain their might and local dominance.
As pre-season preparations intensify, all eyes will be on the new Serbian tactician to see if he can write yet another golden chapter in Villa’s storied romance with Serbian coaches.
