Unbeaten and Unrelenting: Vipers Chase Title Momentum Against Mbarara City

Vipers SC step back onto the Uganda Premier League stage on Tuesday night determined to keep their flawless run intact when they welcome Mbarara City FC to St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

The encounter marks the league’s return after a brief interruption caused by Uganda’s participation at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Few sides have looked as assured as the Venoms this season. With seven victories and three draws from their opening 10 matches, Vipers remain unbeaten and firmly in the title conversation.

They occupy second place on 24 points, breathing down the necks of leaders KCCA FC, who sit just a single point ahead having played one extra match and are also in action earlier in the day against Police FC.

For Mbarara City, the challenge is of a different nature. The Ankole Lions head to Kitende positioned 13th on the log with 10 points from 11 outings in the 16-team division. While not in immediate danger, they are eager to gain momentum and put daylight between themselves and the relegation scrap as the season begins to take shape.

Both sides arrive with confidence after positive results before the break. Vipers edged Lugazi FC 2–1 in a gritty contest, with Usama Arafat and Yunus Sentamu finding the net.

Mbarara City also enjoyed a morale-boosting outing, grinding out a 1–0 win over URA FC courtesy of Henry Kitegenyi’s decisive finish.

History, however, heavily favours the hosts. Across 17 previous meetings in all competitions, Vipers have asserted dominance with 10 wins, five draws and only two defeats against Mbarara City.

That superiority was clear last season as well, when Vipers completed a league double. At Kitende, Allan Okello struck the winner in a narrow victory, before producing a brace in Kakyeka alongside a Yunus Sentamu goal to inspire a 3–1 away triumph, with Latif Ssenkubuge netting Mbarara City’s lone response.

As the lights come on at Kitende, the message is clear: Vipers are hunting consistency, pressure on the leaders, and another step forward in their title charge, while Mbarara City aim to upset the script and announce themselves away from home.
