Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté has revealed he struggled with depression last season following the deaths of team‑mate Diogo Jota and his father.
Jota and his brother died in a car crash last July, while Konaté’s father passed away in January. “Depression is personal; it takes over your whole body,” he told France Inter, admitting his form dipped as he tried to cope.
The 27‑year‑old said Jota’s death “devastated” him, and returning to football felt like duty rather than choice. He also carried the burden of his father’s illness, confessing he kept his pain to himself instead of talking.
Konaté made 51 appearances as Liverpool finished fifth but admitted he never felt fully recovered. Now set for a move to Real Madrid, he remains part of France’s World Cup squad.
