Finnish Side KuPS Sign Uganda Cranes Winger Calvin Kabuye

Calvin Kabuye is trading the familiar terrain of Swedish football for a fresh Nordic adventure after completing a permanent transfer from Mjällby AIF to Finnish champions Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS).

The 22-year-old left winger now steps into the Veikkausliiga on a deal that runs from 2026-02-07 to 2028-12-31, with the transfer fee kept under wraps.

It’s a move that closes one chapter and opens another. Mjällby had brought Kabuye in from Sandvikens IF, sent him out to Varbergs BoIS to sharpen his edge, then reintegrated him into their squad before sanctioning this sale.

KuPS, perennial contenders at the top of Finnish football, believe they’re landing a wide attacker ready to make an immediate impact at domestic level and in European qualification.

The latest valuation pegs Kabuye at €400k, a figure that reflects both his youth and the steady upward trend in his stock across Scandinavia.

Born in Huddinge and measuring 1.83m, Kabuye is very much a product of Sweden’s development system, even as he keeps one eye on his Ugandan roots.

His football education was shaped at AIK, where he climbed from the U17s to the U19s before breaking into the first team picture. From there, his early professional years became a tour of Swedish football’s proving grounds, with loans designed to harden his game through regular minutes.

Those stints away from Stockholm took him to Vasalunds IF and later Östersunds FK, where he learned to shoulder responsibility and adapt to different tactical demands.

Each return to AIK came with more experience in the tank. In February 2024, he finally cut the cord with a permanent move to Sandvikens IF, a decision that gave him continuity and a platform to grow into senior football. Mjällby’s move for him in early 2025 followed, a clear signal that his performances were being noticed at a higher level.

Even during his time on loan at Varbergs BoIS, Kabuye’s reputation continued to tick upward. His market value climbed incrementally, from €100k at Östersunds FK in mid-2023, to €250k back at AIK, then to €350k across spells with Sandvikens IF and Mjällby, before reaching €400k during his Varbergs stint. It’s the kind of slow-burn rise that suggests a player earning belief rather than riding hype.

Now comes the real test of reinvention. The switch to KuPS is his first venture beyond Sweden’s borders, placing him in a league with different rhythms, styles, and pressures. KuPS are banking on his pace and attacking instincts from the left flank, while Kabuye is banking on the move to broaden his game and his profile. It’s a leap into unfamiliar territory, new language, new dressing room, new expectations, but one that could accelerate his development if he settles quickly.

The length of the contract offers breathing room for both sides. KuPS secure a young winger through the crucial early years of his senior career, and Kabuye gets the stability to find his feet and impose himself in Finland. For a player who has spent much of his career bouncing between loans and short-term stops, that continuity could prove invaluable.

If his progression continues on the same upward trajectory, this spell in Kuopio may become the moment his career shifts gears. A strong showing in the Veikkausliiga, and possibly in European qualifiers, would elevate his standing within Nordic football and beyond. Whether that eventually leads him back to Sweden at a higher rung, into a new European market, or onto the international stage for one of his two national affiliations, the road now leads north.
