Uganda’s national basketball team, the Silverbacks, are stranded in Egypt after concluding their FIBA World Cup qualifying campaign with a 91–52 defeat to Egypt on Sunday night.
Several players had been scheduled to return to their respective clubs by Monday morning.
That plan was halted after flights in Egypt were suspended due to the ongoing political escalation in the Middle East, leaving members of the delegation unable to travel.
Among those stuck is NBS Sport reporter Tuka Brian, who is in Egypt covering the team.
Speaking on the NBS Sport morning show, he said players are increasingly worried about how they will reconnect with their clubs amid the uncertainty surrounding travel arrangements.
The situation has prompted swift action from the federation. The National Teams Committee is expected to convene an emergency meeting on Monday morning to assess the circumstances and explore possible solutions for the team’s safe return or onward travel.
For some players, the disruption carries added complexity. Jonathan Komagum, who was set for a move from Syria to Qatar faces a difficult decision. With travel routes uncertain, he may need to either connect to his family in the UK or return to Uganda, depending on how the situation develops.
