The 116th edition of the Chairman’s Cup, one of Uganda’s longest-running multi-sport events, has introduced CrossFit as a new discipline in a bid to attract more young participants.
The tournament, hosted by Kampala Club and underway since March 16, now features eleven sports, ranging from traditional racket games and swimming to board classics like chess, scrabble, and Mweso. The addition of CrossFit marks a modern twist to the century-old competition, reflecting evolving fitness trends.
Speaking at the launch, Kampala Club Chairman David Kamukama emphasized the importance of youth engagement: “This year, our main focus is attracting the young generation to participate in Kampala Club sports events. For us, we are growing older, but the young people are the future of the club.”
Founded in 1911, the Chairman’s Cup has long been a platform for nurturing talent, with past participants in squash and badminton rising to national-level competition. Organizers hope the inclusion of CrossFit will broaden the appeal of the event and inspire a new generation of athletes.
This year’s tournament will run until March 21, when champions across all disciplines will be crowned, continuing a tradition that has shaped Uganda’s sporting culture for over a century.
