The race for top seats in the Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) has intensified with Honourable Gideon Onyango and Yusuf Meyan officially joining the contest ahead of the April 20 nomination deadline.
Onyango, seeking the chairmanship, and Meyan, eyeing the vice chairmanship, picked nomination forms from PAU’s Kamwokya offices, signalling their intent to steer the sport into a new era. Their entry adds weight to a growing field of aspirants at a time when stakeholders are pressing for reforms in the governance and commercialisation of pool.
The duo outlined their vision to elevate pool from its informal roots into a structured, respected, and financially viable sport. They cited persistent challenges such as weak player welfare programmes, low sponsorship, and limited media visibility, alongside a centralised administration that has slowed regional growth.
If elected, Onyango and Meyan pledged to roll out school-based programmes, invest in dedicated pool arenas, and attract stronger partnerships to boost funding. They also vowed to prioritise player welfare, expand women’s participation, and enhance media coverage to raise the sport’s national profile.
Their candidacy comes as PAU prepares for a decisive leadership transition, with nominations closing in just three days.
