Uganda Sevens Finish Sixth at Montevideo HSBC Challenger Series

The Uganda Sevens team commenced their training at the Ayax Training Facility, University of Ghana, ahead of their opening game of 13th African Games on March 19th.

Coach Tolbert Onyango shared insights into the team’s first day, emphasizing the challenging conditions in Accra.

“On our first day of training in Accra, the weather is hot and humid, but it’s conducive for our initial run-out. The boys are in good spirits, and fortunately, there are no injuries in camp. We’re eagerly anticipating the start of the tournament,” he said.

The Sevens flew to Accra from Uruguay, where they competed in the HSBC World Challenger Series.

Coach Tolbert Onyango said the team was working on areas of improvement based on the Montevideo series in their training sessions.

“In Montevideo, we identified a few gaps in our plays, and today, we focused on rectifying them. We also had discussions with the team and went through our processes at a steady pace,” he said.

Rugby Sevens player Desire Ayera shared his perspective on the challenges of the first training session and their outlook moving forward.

“Adjusting to the new weather and time zones can be tough, but we’re aware of our objectives, and we believe we have divine support. The first training session is always a test of adaptation, but I’m confident we’ll overcome it,” he said.

Uganda is set to play their opening two games on March 19th against Burkina Faso and Tunisia, respectively.
