Kyoga Avengers strengthened their grip on top spot in the Great Lakes Men’s T20 standings while Mburo Blasters continued their impressive form on day three of the competition at Lugogo Cricket Oval on Sunday.
The day’s action produced two contrasting victories, with Kyoga overcoming Bunyonyi Warriors by 21 runs in the morning fixture before Mburo Blasters completed a ruthless eight-wicket win over Victoria Strikers in the afternoon.
Kyoga Avengers laid the foundation for their victory after posting a competitive 163 for seven from their 20 overs. After losing Conrad Lubwama early for five, Julius Okema steadied the innings with 37 off 45 balls, while Robert Owili added a brisk 25 from 18 deliveries.
The innings gathered momentum towards the end through Juma Miyaji’s explosive 20 from just nine balls before Derrick Bakunzi produced the decisive contribution. The all-rounder blasted an unbeaten 45 off 22 deliveries, including five fours and three sixes, to lift Kyoga to a challenging total.
Bunyonyi Warriors’ bowlers found some success through Devansh Patel and Rayan Tendo, who claimed two wickets apiece, but struggled to contain Kyoga’s late assault.
In reply, Bunyonyi remained in contention for much of the chase. Patel struck 30 from 25 balls and Fred Achelam added 37 from 26 deliveries to keep the scoreboard moving. However, Kyoga’s bowlers delivered crucial breakthroughs at key stages of the innings.
Junaid Khan and Richard Agamire picked up two wickets each, while Dan Keith Amani chipped in with an important dismissal. A late unbeaten 43 from Abu Seguya gave Bunyonyi hope, but the target ultimately proved beyond reach as they closed on 142 for six.
Bakunzi’s match-winning knock earned him the Player of the Match award and helped Kyoga secure their third consecutive victory of the tournament.
The afternoon encounter saw Mburo Blasters continue their dominance with another commanding display against Victoria Strikers.
The Strikers were restricted to 130 all out in 18 overs despite some aggressive batting. Pius Oloka top-scored with a rapid 34 off 16 balls, while Amos Ahurra contributed 25 from 18 deliveries. Bosco Akena remained unbeaten on 22, but regular wickets prevented the innings from building any sustained momentum.
Mburo’s bowling attack shared the workload effectively, with Shehran Ali claiming three wickets and Brighton Muganzi taking two. Captain Riazat Ali Shah also made an early impact with the ball after removing Simon Ssesazi.
Any hopes of defending the modest total quickly disappeared once Mburo began their chase. Charles Musemeza provided a quick start before Shehzad Khan and Riazat took complete control of proceedings.
The pair dominated the Strikers’ bowling attack with an unbroken partnership that carried Mburo comfortably to 135 for two in just 12.1 overs. Shehzad struck an unbeaten 54 from 32 balls, while Riazat matched him with 54 not out from only 30 deliveries, including six fours and three sixes.
The latest half-century further strengthened Riazat’s position as the tournament’s leading run-scorer and earned him another Player of the Match award.
After three days of action, Kyoga Avengers lead the standings with six points, ahead of Mburo Blasters on four. Bunyonyi Warriors have two points, while Victoria Strikers remain without a point.
The tournament continues on Monday with Bunyonyi Warriors facing Kyoga Avengers in the morning match before Victoria Strikers take on Mburo Blasters in the afternoon fixture.
