Former Uganda Crested Cranes forward Oliver Mbekeka has made managerial history in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

Mbekeka has been named the assistant head coach of the newly promoted Lugazi Football Club, the first time it has happened in the history of the UPL.

No female tactician has ever managed a UPL team as a full head coach but now that Mbekeka has taken on the deputy role at Lugazi, the top seat should be her future ambition at the club or somewhere else.

In reverse, the largest number of women teams the world over are managed by men. Mbekeka will deputise Sadiq Sempigi who was also recently appointed as the head coach.

“Mbekeka’s experience and deep understanding of the game will be invaluable as we aim to establish ourselves in the Premier League,” Sempigi lauded his counterpart.

“Her tactical knowledge and ability to mentor young talent align perfectly with our club’s vision,” he added.

The club’s chairman, Hajji Abdul Kawuulu could not agree more with Sempigi regarding Mbekeka’s potential.

“The appointment of Mbekeka as assistant coach underscores our dedication to strengthening our technical team,” he said.

“We are confident that under the leadership of Sempigi and the support of Mbekeka, Lugazi will achieve great success in the UPL,” he added.

Mbekeka has previously managed FUFA Women Super League outfit Lady Doves FC and the Uganda women’s U20 national team.
