The Crested Cranes defeated Burundi 3-1 in the 2022 CECAFA Women Championship on a historic day for the ladies’ national side.
Uganda – also hosts of the regional championship – were dominant over 90 minutes in front of a crowd of over 5000 fans who flocked the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Sunday.
Sandra Nabweteme helped herself to a brace with Fazila Ikwaput who was also named the tournament’s best player added the other to finish the tournament with six goals.
The match got off to a frantic start as Nabweteme poked the Crested Cranes ahead after only two minutes.
Ikwaput once again lit up the tournament with an incredible solo goal leaving the entire Burundi defence in her wake including the goalkeeper before slotting into an empty net.
Uganda carried a two-goal lead into the halftime break, but their lead was halved four minutes into the second half as Joelle Bukuru made Burundi’s period of dominance work.
The action in the second half was continuous and manic, but Nabweteme put the icing on the cake with a stoppage-time goal.
Uganda left their mark on the tournament conceding only twice in five games as they lifted their first CECAFA Women Championship title.
Both goals coincidentally came against Burundi. Uganda had earlier beaten the Swallows 4-1 in their final Group A game.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia beat Tanzania 2-1 to settle for bronze in the third-place play-off.
