The third edition of the Uganda National Badminton League opened with fireworks at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, where debutants SR KUKU made a commanding statement on their first appearance.
The newcomers stole the spotlight on opening day, sweeping aside seasoned opposition and immediately positioning themselves as serious contenders for the crown.
Their strong start is anchored by a star-studded squad blending national team pedigree with experienced campaigners. Africa’s top seed Shamika Fadilah, veteran Gladys Mbabazi, and stalwart Kenneth Mwambu headline the roster.
Mbabazi, fresh from training stints abroad, marked her return to domestic competition with a pledge to balance performance and mentorship. “I felt it was the right time for me to come back and compete, but also to guide the younger players and share my experience,” she said.

Her presence, alongside other experienced figures, is expected to be pivotal in SR KUKU’s push for honours this season. With such a dominant debut, the team has set the pace for what promises to be a fiercely contested campaign.
League action continues at Lugogo in the coming weeks, with more thrilling encounters lined up as Uganda’s top clubs battle for supremacy.
