The She Cranes have become a household name in Netball following their adventures on both the continental and global scene. Currently ranked 6th in the world, they will be taking part in the 2022 World Netball Fast5 series in New Zealand.
Fred Mugerwa’s side arrived in the Oceanian country at the start of the week and have been undertaking preparations for the competition that starts on Saturday.
The She Cranes are the reigning African champions and finished 5th at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK.
With all the top five nations in the World currently in Switzerland, Uganda is the least fancied to win the competition but Mugerwa thinks otherwise.
“We know we are coming up against the best sides in the world but we are not scared. Mugerwa said.
“We are now mastering the rules and come game-time, we will be in to compete and not just participate.”
Mary Nuba who is one of the two foreign-based players in the She Cranes squad says the Fast5 will be a learning experience for the team.
“This is our first time at the competition and we want to use it as a learning experience and have fun.”
Uganda will be taking part in their maiden Fast5 tournament. Mugerwa’s side will face New Zealand in their opening game on Saturday.
Only two nations, New Zealand and England have won it before. New Zealand who won the first edition in Manchester has 7 titles to their name while England has triumphed on two occasions.
No African nation has reached the final of the competition with South Africa in 2012 and Malawi 2016, 3rd place finishes being the continent’s best performance to date.
