The Uganda Men’s U20 national football team progressed to the semi finals of the 2022 CECAFA U20 AFCON Zonal Qualifiers following a 2-2 draw between Ethiopia and Tanzania on Wednesday.
With two teams progressing from each group, the draw means only one of Ethiopia and Tanzania can better Uganda’s three points at the end of the group stage.
The Hippos defeated Tanzania 2-0 in their opening game and will take on Ethiopia in the final group game on Saturday.
“We are delighted to have moved closer to our goal of reaching the 2022 AFCON finals. Hippos head coach said ahead of Thursday’s training session.
We always knew we are good to make it out of the group but the work does not stop there.
Now we shift focus to Ethiopia who we very much want to defeat so that we send a message to those that we will be facing in the semis.
The Hippos are attempting to defend the CECAFA crown they won in Tanzania back in 2019.
The tournament in Tanzania is also being used as a qualifier for the 2023 U20 AFCON in Egypt.
The two teams that will reach the final in Sudan will represent the East African Region at the continental showpiece.
