The 2021 AFCON U20 champions put on a strong display in their opening match of Group B of this 2023 Total Energies U20 African Cup of Nations at Suez Canal Authority Stadium.
The Central African Republic’s goalkeeper Abimala had to make early saves to stop goals from Titus Ssematimba, Travis Mutyaba, and Rogers Mugisha as Mayanja Jackson’s team dominated the first phase of the game.
Isma Mugulusi scored from close range to break the scoreless tie and give Uganda a well-deserved lead into the game, despite the Hippos failing to score in the first half.
Ismael Mugulusi and Roger Mugisha both missed opportunities to score, but John Paul Dembe provided a moment of magic with a stunning goal in the 74th minute to make it 2:0.
A few minutes before the game’s conclusion, Central African Republic scored to make the score 2:1, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Hippos from winning.
On Thursday, February 23, the Uganda Hippos will play Congo Brazzaville, who also got a win 2-1 off South Sudan on Monday.
