The Nile Special Rugby National Sevens is set to make its highly anticipated return this weekend, on July 1st and 2nd, at the scenic Dam Waters in Jinja, known as the Stone City. The event will take place at the home ground of the reigning 2022 champions, the Jinja Hippos, adding to the excitement and expectations surrounding the tournament.
This year’s edition of the tournament will feature 16 teams, divided into four different pools. Among the participants are some new faces, including the Kitante Eagles and Crocs, bringing a fresh dynamic to the competition. However, upon reviewing the pools, it becomes evident that the top teams are favored to dominate the tournament. The Jinja Hippos, who are the defending champions, along with the Platinum Credit Heathens, Stanbic Black Pirates, and Kobs, are expected to be the frontrunners in this year’s contest.
Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that underdog teams also have the potential to make a significant impact and surprise the audience. The tournament has witnessed such surprises in the past, where teams considered to be underdogs managed to create shockwaves and upset the favorites.
Recalling the 2022 Circuit, various teams emerged victorious in different legs of the competition. The Pirates secured the title in the Wakiso 7s and Buffaloes 7s, while the Heathens triumphed in the Entebbe 7s and the Arua 7s. The Kobs displayed their strength by claiming victories in the Rujumba 7s and the Tooro 7s. Finally, the Hippos showcased their dominance by winning the overall title in the Kyabazinga 7s and were crowned the champions of 2022.
This year’s Sevens series, commencing and concluding in Jinja, promises to provide a comprehensive experience of the tourism city. Spectators and participants can expect thrilling matches and captivating moments throughout the tournament.
A notable addition to this year’s competition is the Rhinos Rugby Club. After defeating the Elgon Wolves in the qualification competition held at Wankulukuku Stadium last year, the Rhinos have earned their place as a core team in the series. They will be replacing the relegated Walukuba Barbarians, further intensifying the competition and raising the stakes for all the teams involved.
As rugby enthusiasts gear up for the Nile Special Rugby National Sevens, the stage is set for an unforgettable weekend of sporting excellence, camaraderie, and the celebration of this beloved sport.
