Uganda rugby sevens captain Aaron Ofoyrwoth believes playing at this year’s Safari 7s is a key experience for both the men and the women’s national teams who competed at the premium tournament in Nairobi, Kenya last weekend.
The lady rugby sevens emerged women’s champions for the first time in history following a close 15-12 win in the a closely-contested final against hosts Kenya Lionesses while the men’s rugby sevens claimed bronze having seen off Germany 31-7 in the third-place playoff.
The Kenya Shujaa overcame Samurai Barracudas 19-0 to win the men’s title.
Rugby sevens captain and fly half Aaron Ofoyrwoth was named men’s MVP having guided the side to a third-place finish, their best ever performance at Safari 7s. Ofoyrwoth reflects on the tournament, “It was a good experience for us to finish third and win the bronze. It also acted as build up for us since we have the Dubai 7s in January so it was a good experience for me to captain team Uganda.”
“I’m proud of the young lads and regarding me emerging top points scorer, it was a team effort and I’m thankful for team Uganda for trusting me and believing in me,” Ofoyrwoth noted.
Peace Lekuru emerged top try scorer and tournament MVP while debutant winger Roy Kizito won in the men’s category. Lekuru says, “We had a good time in Kenya as being the first winners of Safari 7s but we managed to win because we worked together as a team and we stuck to the game plan especially in the semifinals and finals.”
Focus turns to the HSBC world rugby sevens challenger series due 12-14 January 2024 in Dubai.
