With just 3 days until the kick-off of Afcon 2024, the biggest football tournament in Africa has garnered much anticipation as football lovers share their predictions on who will emerge victorious at the end of the tournament. Ironically, only three teams that have ever won the tournament won’t be taking part in the competition, namely Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, and Sudan, which makes this edition very competitive.
The tournament, originally slated to be played in 2023, was pushed to 2024 due to weather concerns, as announced by the CAF president who emphasized their commitment to avoiding risks.
During the launch of the partnership between Star Times and the Next Media Park, where Sanyuka Prime was unveiled as the official broadcaster of the tournament featuring 52 games, Joe Kigozi, the Deputy Group CEO of Next Media, expressed delight that Next Media is part of the tournament.
When asked about one of the greatest African players, he was not shy to name former Liberian George Weah, who is also the only African footballer to have ever won the Ballon d’Or. Joe Kigozi also emphasized that Africa has produced some of the greatest footballers the world has ever known.
“AFCON has a rich history; it is the most-watched football tournament on the African continent. We are thrilled to broadcast these games not only to Ugandans but also to Africa and the entire world. I challenge the commentators to shed light on these historical facts, allowing everyone to appreciate and understand its significance, making the experience more enjoyable and enlightening for all.
AFCON stands out as the most-watched football tournament in Africa. We are excited to bring these matches to not only Ugandans but also to viewers across Africa and around the globe.
Present at the presser was Star Times Vice President and veteran sports journalist, Aldrine Nsubuga, who stated that since Uganda is one of the hosts for the 2027 AFCON tournament, they should benchmark this experience to learn things that will contribute to the success of the tournament.
“Considering that we are hosting AFCON and participating in 2027, it is important for fans, players, and sports administrators to embrace the opportunity to watch #AFCON2023 on StarTimes Uganda, aiming to learn and better our game,” he said.
Uganda was last in the AFCON tournament in the 2019 edition in Egypt, which was the 32nd edition of the tournament, after beating Cape Verde in Namboole Stadium by a goal to 0.
