The highly anticipated Uganda Cup finals are scheduled for January 20th, featuring intense matchups. The women’s finals at Kings Park Arena kick off at 2 pm, showcasing Nile Rapids against Avengers. Following that, the men’s finals at 4 pm will see Platinum Credit Heathens facing off against Life Guard Rams.
Life Guard Rams achieved a historic qualification for the finals by delivering an impressive performance against Plascon Mongers at their home grounds in Entebbe. Meanwhile, Platinum Credit Heathens secured their spot after defeating KCB Kobs at Legends Rugby.
Rams becomes the 5th different club to feature in a Uganda Cup final, joining Heathens, Impis, Pirates & KOBs.
Heathens and Rams met in the 2018 Uganda Cup quarterfinal at Kyadondo, with Heathens emerging victorious 27-03.
Looking to secure their 13th Uganda Cup, Platinum Credit Heathens are geared up for a challenging game against Life Guard Rams. In the 2022 final against Stanbic Black Pirates, they emerged victorious in a thrilling match, with Joseph Oyet’s two drop goals in extra time securing a 20-14 win after a 14-14 tie in regular play.
Throughout the Uganda Cup series, star player Daniel Malcolm Okello played a pivotal role, especially with his impressive performances using his boot for the Heathens. Notably, the team missed key player Aaron Ofoyrwoth, who has been on national team duty for several months.
It’s also important to remember that in 1999, Heathens came out victorious defeating Impis in the finals of the become the first Uganda Cup winners.
Heathens then went on to dominate the Cup winning it for six straight years before being stopped by Kobs Rugby in the 2005.
The Uganda Cup traditionally signals the start of the Nile Special Rugby League, beginning a few weeks after the initially communicated date. The reigning champions for the 2023 season are Stanbic Black Pirates.
