President Museveni Directs Akii-Bua Staduim to Be Used For Afcon 2027

State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang together with officials from the National Council of Sports on Thursday unveiled an Egyptian contractor to undertake the construction of Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City ahead of the 2027 AFCON tournament.

The move comes barely months after the same minister announced the exclusion of Akii-Bua Stadium from hosting the games. While unveiling the Egyptian Company Samko International, the minister said that the works will be financed by the contractor, with at least $70million being spent in the first phase of work.

The current state of the stadium

The new decision, according to Ogwang, was arrived at on Wednesday after a presidential directive to have Akii-Bua stadium listed among those set to host the AFCON 2027. Uganda won the bid to co-host the 2027 Africa cup of nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania with the government currently inspecting and evaluating the available infrastructure.
