As Kenya’s Shujaa Sevens prepare for the upcoming leg of the HSBC Sevens Challenger series in Uruguay, their captain, Tony Omondi, has emphasized that they will draw upon the lessons learned from their victorious campaign in Dubai as a guiding principle for the Montevideo Series.
Currently leading the standings, Shujaa have high expectations for their performance in Montevideo. Omondi stressed that nothing less than a top-four finish would be considered successful for the squad.
Reflecting on their journey in Dubai, Omondi highlighted the importance of resilience and adaptability. Despite a setback against Germany, Shujaa rallied and eventually secured the title.
“The tournament was a success. We exceeded expectations and claimed the title,” Omondi remarked.
Acknowledging the challenges encountered, Omondi underscored the significance of learning from each experience.
“It provided us with valuable lessons and served as a reminder that every team must be approached with both mental and physical care,” he explained.
In Pool A, Kenya will face 2023 Challenger champions Tonga, along with Georgia and Portugal. Pool B features Dubai runners-up Chile, alongside Olympic-qualified Japan, as well as Hong Kong China and Mexico. Meanwhile, Uruguay, the bronze medalists from Dubai who will also compete in the Olympic Games Paris 2024, find themselves in a fiercely competitive Pool C, where they will take on Germany, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea.
