World Rugby Contemplates Introducing Smaller Ball for Women’s Game

World Rugby is exploring the possibility of implementing a smaller ball in women’s matches. Currently, women play with a standard size 5 ball, but the global governing body is now evaluating the use of a size 4.5 ball, which is approximately 3% smaller and 3-4% lighter than the traditional size 5 ball.

The initiative aims to gather comprehensive data on the size 4.5 ball, both in training sessions and actual game play, to assess its impact on the women’s game. By considering a slightly smaller and lighter ball, World Rugby seeks to optimize performance and promote greater skill development among female players.

The proposed adjustment reflects World Rugby’s commitment to continuously innovate and improve the sport, tailoring equipment specifications to better suit the needs and characteristics of women’s rugby. While the use of a smaller ball is still under review, its potential introduction signals a proactive approach to advancing the women’s game on a global scale.

As World Rugby collects and analyzes data on the size 4.5 ball, stakeholders and enthusiasts eagerly await further updates on the potential implementation of this initiative. With a focus on promoting inclusivity, fairness, and excellence in women’s rugby, World Rugby remains dedicated to exploring avenues for growth and enhancement within the sport.
