The UEFA Football Board has called for a renewed focus on improving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, emphasizing the need for greater consistency, transparency, and clarity. The Board, comprised of legendary football figures like Luis Figo, Rio Ferdinand, Rafael Benítez, Patrick Vieira, and Petr Čech, convened to provide an independent perspective on key footballing issues.
Their discussions centered on the role of VAR and how it can be optimized to benefit the game. The Board acknowledged the value of VAR as a tool to assist referees in making crucial on-field decisions. However, they stressed the importance of ensuring consistent application of the technology across matches and competitions.
“The board recommended working towards ensuring its use is more consistent, transparent and understandable for players, coaches and fans,” a statement published on the UEFA website declared. “VAR should be seen as a tool helping referees and its interventions should not be perceived as a negative judgement on referees themselves. It is clear as that not everything on the pitch may be seen by the referee.”
