Ugandan athletes showcased their prowess on the opening day of the East African Athletic Regional (EAAR) Games in Zanzibar, clinching an impressive haul of 9 medals across various categories for Under 18 (U18) and Under 20 (U20) competitions.
In the men’s 5000m event, Yeko Sam soared to victory, claiming the gold medal for Team Uganda, while in the 1500m race, Kiprop Hosea secured another gold, further solidifying Uganda’s standing in the competition.
The women’s U18 3000m race saw a stellar performance from Chebet Keziah, who clinched the gold medal, accompanied by Yeko Bendalin, who secured the silver. Meanwhile, Chepkwemboi Felister triumphed in the U18 1500m event, adding another gold to Uganda’s tally.
Vicky Anamu showcased her exceptional speed in the women’s U20 400m race, earning Uganda yet another gold medal. In the men’s U20 400m event, Osutaa Dison brought home the silver, while Omara Raymond secured silver in the men’s 800m race.
Not to be outdone, Francis Adilu claimed the bronze medal in the men’s U20 400m event, contributing to Uganda’s overall success on the first day of the championships.
Originally slated to host the championships, Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) faced challenges due to delays in completing the Namboole National Track. As a result, the Ugandan team departed on Wednesday, April 24th, to represent the country on the regional stage in Zanzibar.
