Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, two prominent FKF Premier League sides, have been handed heavy fines by Sports Kenya for stadium vandalism during the Mashemeji Derby.
The penalties, totaling Ksh 126,000 for Gor Mahia and a staggering Ksh 505,450 for AFC Leopards, come in the wake of significant damage observed at Nyayo National Stadium during last weekend’s heated derby clash.
According to Sports Kenya, the fines are accompanied by a temporary ban from using any Sports Kenya facility until the financial penalties are fully paid.
The sanctions follow reports of extensive damage at Nyayo National Stadium, including broken seats and damaged infrastructure, attributed to fans of both teams during and after the match.
A demand note issued to AFC Leopards, signed by Rakki Asman, the Stadium Manager at Nyayo National Stadium, meticulously outlines the costs of repairs and replacements necessary to restore the stadium to its previous condition.
The list of damages includes a wide range of items, such as a polycarbonate canopy, numerous fixed and portable seats, shovels, corner flags, taps, gate valves, VVIP main door, plyboard cordon outside Gate 5, and more.
The repercussions of the vandalism extend beyond immediate financial impacts, potentially affecting AFC Leopards’ upcoming fixture against Bandari scheduled at Nyayo National Stadium.
