South Africans and boxing enthusiasts are mourning the loss of Dingaan Thobela, a legendary figure in the sport who passed away at the age of 57.
Thobela, affectionately known as “The Rose of Soweto,” breathed his last in his Johannesburg apartment after a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness. He was discovered by family members who were unable to reach him via phone.
Throughout his illustrious career, which spanned from 1990 to 2006, Thobela etched his name in boxing history by capturing three world titles across two weight divisions. With an impressive record of 40 victories out of 56 fights, including 26 knockouts, he left an indelible mark on the sport.
Tributes have been pouring in for Thobela from across the boxing community, with many fondly recalling his incredible speed, skill, and power inside the ring. Advocate Ike Thamsanqa Khumalo reflected on the memorable moments Thobela provided fans, some of which were described as comedic, highlighting the impact he had both in and out of the ring.
