CAF Women’s Coach of the Year, Desiree Ellis, Awarded Honorary Doctorate for Contributions to Women’s Football

Dr. Desiree Ellis, the reigning CAF Women’s Coach of the Year, has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in recognition of her exceptional contributions to women’s football. Ellis, revered for guiding South Africa’s senior women’s national team to their historic triumph at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, now proudly bears the title of Dr. Desiree Ellis following the official conferment ceremony held on Thursday, April 25th.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Ellis has left an indelible mark on the world of women’s football. Her achievements include steering Banyana Banyana to two FIFA Women’s World Cup appearances and securing an impressive four COSAFA Women’s Championship titles. Additionally, her outstanding coaching prowess has been recognized with four consecutive CAF Women Coach of the Year awards, cementing her status as one of the leading figures in African women’s football.

In April of the previous year, Dr. Ellis received further accolades when she was bestowed with the prestigious Order of Ikhamanga in Gold by South Africa’s Head of State, President Cyril Ramaphosa. This esteemed honor is reserved for individuals who have excelled in various fields, including sport, underscoring Ellis’ remarkable achievements and influence within the sporting realm.

Expressing her gratitude for the prestigious recognition, Dr. Ellis emphasized the significance of the honorary doctorate not only for herself but also for the advancement of women’s football on the African continent. She reiterated her fervent desire to see the continued growth of the sport, advocating passionately for the establishment of a professional women’s league, not only in South Africa but throughout Africa.
