Ukrainian Olympian and two-time European weightlifting champion, Oleksandr Pielieshenko, tragically passed away on the frontlines of Russia’s war in Ukraine at the age of 30, according to an announcement by the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation (UWF).
Pielieshenko, who achieved a notable fourth-place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympics in the men’s 85 kg category and secured gold medals at the European championships in 2016 and 2017, had joined the armed forces in the early stages of the invasion.
Despite his sporting achievements, Pielieshenko faced controversy when he was banned from competition after failing a drug test in 2018. However, his untimely death has led to an outpouring of grief and tributes from the weightlifting community and beyond.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the UWF expressed profound sadness over Pielieshenko’s passing, extending heartfelt condolences to his family and all those who knew him. The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine also honored the late athlete, recognizing his sacrifice in defense of his country.
Weightlifting coach and UWF board member Viktor Slobodianiuk hailed Pielieshenko as a hero, emphasizing that while war claims the best among them, true heroes like Pielieshenko live on in memory and legacy.
