United Nations Declares May 25 as World Football Day

In a historic move aimed at celebrating the world’s most beloved sport, the United Nations General Assembly has declared May 25 as World Football Day. The resolution, introduced by Libya’s U.N. Ambassador Taher El-Sonni, received overwhelming support from the international community, underscoring football’s unparalleled global significance and its capacity to unite nations.

The decision to designate May 25 as World Football Day coincides with the centennial anniversary of the first international soccer tournament, which took place during the 1924 summer Olympic games in Paris. This landmark event, which saw representation from all regions, serves as a testament to football’s enduring legacy and universal appeal.

El-Sonni, in his address to the General Assembly, hailed football as more than just a game, emphasizing its role as a universal language transcending cultural and socio-economic boundaries. He underscored football’s capacity to foster cooperation and understanding, citing its impact on commerce, peace, and diplomacy.

The resolution, co-sponsored by over 160 countries, recognizes the pivotal role of FIFA, as well as regional and national soccer federations, in promoting the sport on a global scale. It also encourages nations to harness the power of football and other sports as instruments for peace, development, and the empowerment of women and girls.

On World Football Day, nations, U.N. bodies, international organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector are invited to engage in activities that promote the advantages of football for all. From educational initiatives to public awareness campaigns, the day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the sport’s myriad benefits and its ability to inspire positive change worldwide.
