Former Vipers shot-stopper and Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Ismail Watenga once again proved his worth for South African side Golden Arrows in the DStv South African Premier Division.
Watenga put up an astonishing performance, making a remarkable 9 saves to help his team secure a hard-fought 0-0 home draw against league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night. The Ugandan goalkeeper has now recorded 4 clean sheets in 16 appearances for the Golden Arrows.
The Golden Arrows capitalised on Mamelodi’s red card at the start of the second half to clinch a point from them. The Brazilians were down to 10 men after their defender Mosa Lebusa was shown a straight red for a nasty tackle against Arrows’ foward Nguse Lungero.
Despite Sundown’s red card, they remained dangerous throughout the match. But Watenga’s heroics ensured the spoils were shared at the end.
The draw sees Golden Arrows move up to 10th place in the table with 33 points from 27 games, just a point behind 8th-placed Kaizer Chiefs. They will host Chipper United at their Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban on Sunday 12th May.
Watenga will be eager to once again impress the home fans with another commanding performance as Golden Arrows look to build on this valuable point against the league leaders.
