In a nail-biting Champions League semifinal, Real Madrid staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Bernabeu and secure their place in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Bayern’s Alphonso Davies stunning the home crowd with a superb curling effort to put the visitors in the driver’s seat. Then, Real Madrid’s luck appeared to have run out when captain Nacho’s goal was disallowed for a push on Joshua Kimmich.
But the Spanish giants refused to be deterred, and in the dying minutes of the game, 34-year-old veteran striker Joselu came off the bench to score a remarkable 88th-minute equalizer.
Joselu was not done. The Spanish forward went on to bag his second goal in extra time, completing a remarkable comeback and securing an incredible 4-3 success on aggregate for Real Madrid. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but VAR intervened, and replays showed both Rudiger and Joselu were onside, sending Madrid players and fans into celebrations.
Real boss Carlo Ancelotti, who has now reached his sixth Champions League final as a manager, praised his “unbelievable” players, describing the current squad as the best he has ever had in his illustrious career.
“My players are unbelievable. I’m really grateful to them,” Ancelotti said. “They work really hard, and I think this is the best squad I have ever had in my career.” This will be Real Madrid’s 19th appearance in a European Cup/Champions League final, as they aim to clinch their record 15th title in the competition.
The Los Blancos are the most successful team in the history of the tournament. Ancelotti, who has previously won the Champions League four times, twice with AC Milan and twice with Real Madrid, will be seeking his fifth triumph in the competition when his side faces Borussia Dortmund in the final on June 1st at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
