“Never say never. Nothing is impossible, anything can happen,” wrote Charles Dickens in his 1837 novel, Pickwick Papers. These words might have been re-echoed by Kitara coach Brian Ssenyondo to his players at halftime to inspire a second half comeback.
The Royals were 2-1 down after the first half, but came back with a five-star second-half display to bag the three points at home against Busoga United and move to second on the log, just one point behind leaders BUL in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
The visitors went in front courtesy of two quick goals early goals from Bushamu Mugwa and Emmanuel Ajo in the 10th and 11th minutes, respectively. However, Kitara forward Brian Aheebwa halved the deficit when he scored in the 24th minute. The score was 2-1 in favour of the visitors at halftime.
Early in the second half, Kitara fans’ hearts were broken by a penalty miss by Denis Omedi, but the hosts didn’t give up and shortly after, they equalized thanks to a 63rd-minute strike by man of the match Frank Tumwesigye Zaga.
Then, the newly promoted side’s title hopes were kept alive by Living Kabon when he scored a late injury-time winner to bag all three points. They are now level on points with third-placed Villa and have the same head-to-head record with them, but have a better goal difference than the Jogoos.
The spirited performance from Kitara means that they’re aiming for the “double,” since they have already qualified for the final of the Uganda Cup, and are just one point shy of the top spot in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
