Maroons forward Fred Amaku is determined to end the 2023/24 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season on a high, as he continues his pursuit of the Golden Boot award.
Amaku, who has netted 12 goals and provided 7 assists so far in this campaign, finds himself just four goals behind the league’s current top scorer, Muhammad Shaban Jagason of KCCA, who has netted 16 goals so far.
In an interview with sports journalist Peter Tabu, the prolific foward expressed his unwavering ambition to add at least four more goals to his tally in the remaining two games, which would put him in a strong position to claim the prestigious individual accolade.
“My dream is to achieve the Golden Boot, and I have to score 4 more goals in these last 2 games,” Amaku stated confidently. The 28-year-old also revealed his desire to increase his assists tally, which currently stands at 7.
“If I can assist, that is also a great win. I want to increase on my number of assists of this season,” he said.
Amaku attributed his impressive form this season to his improved fitness, contrary to the previous campaign, where he was plagued by injuries.
“I have had an improvement this season because I’m okay, and I haven’t been disturbed by injuries like last season,” the striker explained.
Amaku and his Maroons side will face a crucial test today as they travel to Bombo to take on UPDF, a team fighting for survival at the bottom of the table.
UPDF will be hoping to secure a much-needed victory, but Amaku will be determined to add to his goal tally and keep his Golden Boot dreams alive. Maroons will conclude their campaign on Saturday, May 18th, with a tricky encounter against sixth-placed KCCA.
Fred Amaku is 5th in the race for the golden boot, which is topped by Muhammad Shaban Jagason with 16 goals, 2 more of Express’ Isaac Wagoina who is second. Wagoina is closely followed by Nelson Senkatuka of Bright Stars and Denis Omedi of Kitara, both of whom have 13 goals.
