In an unprecedented display of unity, Arsenal fans worldwide have put their fierce rivalry with North London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur aside, rallying their traditional rivals to secure atleast a draw against title contenders Manchester City tonight.
The unusual alliance was sparked by Arsenal player Kai Havertz, who stated on Sunday after his team’s win against Manchester United, “I’m going to be the biggest Tottenham fan ever on Tuesday. Let’s hope for the best.”
Celebrated journalist and Arsenal fan Piers Morgan echoed Havertz’s sentiment, posting on his official X platform on Monday, “Tomorrow, for one day only, I’m a Spurs fan – however painful that may be.”
This sudden show of support for The Lilywhites left many Spurs fans angered. They would prefer their team losing to Man City, instead of helping their arch-rivals clinch their first title in 20 years. However, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou challenged their mindset saying, “I never will understand if someone wants their own team to lose.”
The sentiment that was quickly backed by PiersMorgan, who reposted on X, “Well said, Ange. Any Spurs fans who genuinely want their team to lose tonight should have their season tickets revoked.”
Robbie Lyle, the founder and CEO of AFTV, Arsenal’s biggest fan-owned YouTube channel, also called upon Spurs supporters to get behind their team, urging them to “Get your heads in gear and believe, you can win that game against City.”
However, not all Arsenal fans are optimistic about Tottenham’s chances against the reigning champions.
Geno Eric, a staunch Gunners fan expressed his reservations saying, “All I can do is hope for the best, but I wouldn’t support a rival team. We (Arsenal) had a chance to win it ourselves, but lost to Aston Villa,” he said.
“Given Tottenham’s poor performance in their last games, I can’t support them. Let fate take its course,” he added.
Arsenal are currently one point ahead of City in the table, but have played a game more, and will hope Spurs upset Man City tonight. Should City prevail, the race will go down to the final day, with Pep Guardiola’s side needing to win to secure a record-breaking fourth consecutive English top-flight league title.
