The 2023/24 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season is set to climax this Saturday, May 18th, with the top four teams separated by just three points.
With Villa, BUL, Vipers and Kitara all still standing a chance to clinch the title on the final day, this is what is supposed to happen for any of the four teams to be crowned champions.
SC Villa, who are currently sitting atop the table with 54 points, are in the driver’s seat. A win against NEC on Saturday at Lugogo will take them to 57 points, and automatically secure them their first league title in 20 years.
If Villa draw against NEC, they’ll have to hope for BUL, Vipers, and Kitara to drop points. A draw for Villa, but drop in points for BUL, Vipers and Kitara will ensure they are atleast one point above the rest of the teams, which will make them champions for a record 17th time.
BUL, who are in second place with 53 points, will need to secure a win against Busoga at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru. But a win won’t be enough. They will also hope for Villa to drop points against NEC in order to be crowned champions.
If BUL win, any result for Vipers SC, who also have 53 points won’t matter, since they have a better head-to-head record against the Venoms.
Vipers will be hosting Mbarara City at their St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende. They need to win and hope that Villa and BUL drop points, which would take them to the top of the table.
Kitara, sitting in fourth place with 51 points, have the steepest hill to climb to the title. They will need to win against Gadaffi in Masindi and hope that Villa, BUL, and Vipers all lose. This would level Kitara with Villa on 54 points, but Kitara would be crowned champions due to their superior head-to-head record against the Jogoos.
However, there will be some drama if Kitara win, Villa lose, and then both Vipers and BUL draw. This will mean that they’ll all be level on 54 points. In this case, BUL will be crowned champions since they have the best head to head record when compared to the other 3 teams.
