Technical teams from the National Council of Sports and the Ministry of Education and Sports convened on Thursday, May 16, with Samco contractors and Khater Sport from Egypt to finalize the construction plans for Akii-Bua Stadium. This project is a crucial part of Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) games.
Akii-Bua Stadium, named after the renowned Ugandan athlete John Akii-Bua, is one of the key sports facilities designated for the upcoming AFCON tournament.
Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, announced in March that an agreement had been reached with the contractors to finance and build the stadium on a pre-finance basis.
The construction is slated to be completed within 22 months, aiming for a timely handover to meet the CAF’s deadline of December 2025.
This development follows the recent approval by Parliament of UGX 152 billion for the commencement of construction on Hoima Stadium, another vital facility for the 2027 AFCON games. The timely completion of these projects is essential to secure Uganda’s hosting rights for the tournament.
