Former Banyana Banyana player Amanda Dlamini has lauded the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for providing equal opportunities to both boys and girls, a move she believes is instrumental in the ongoing growth of African football.
Dlamini, who recently made history as the first female commentator at the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, expressed her admiration for CAF’s initiatives at a welcome dinner for the girls’ U15 teams participating in the CAF African Schools Football Championship Continental Finals in Zanzibar.
The championship, which runs from 21 to 24 May, brings together young footballers from across the continent. Dlamini, present at the event as part of the CAF Legends program, is sharing her experiences and offering encouragement to the young athletes.
“I am excited and honored to be part of such an initiative by CAF. Growing up in rural areas without infrastructure, you probably wait 20 years to get on your first flight to represent your country. Yet CAF, through this tournament, has fast-tracked this process for these youngsters and afforded them a unique experience of international football,” Dlamini said.
Dlamini, who has represented South Africa at two CAF Women’s AFCON tournaments, also spoke on the importance of CAF’s capacity-building programs taking place alongside the competition.
“I have to commend CAF for ensuring that grassroots football isn’t just about development, but also about giving kids an opportunity to feel represented. Had I had the opportunity for such workshops, it would have prepared me for life after football and other career paths. I am excited that these young girls get to experience football holistically. It’s not just about talent but also career opportunities and the diversity of meeting other young girls,” she concluded.
The CAF African Schools Football Championship continues at Amaan Stadium, with the final match scheduled for Friday, 24 May. All matches can be viewed live daily on CAF’s official YouTube channel, CAF TV.
