With Uganda set to host the 2024 and 2025 Rugby Africa Cup editions at Mandela national stadium, Namboole, NBS Sport General Manager Joe Kigozi is optimistic the tournaments will offer a platform for rugby development in the country.
He made the remarks at a launch event last evening at King’s Park Arena, Bweyogerere where he joined Uganda Rugby Union president Godwin Kayangwe, trustees Hon Dan Kidega and Prince David Wasajja, Government Chief Whip Hon. Hamson Obua, Nile Breweries commercial manager Davidson Wadada with Rugby Afrique president Herbert Mensah and other participating union heads joining the launch online.
“Having African countries come to Uganda and be hosted at Namboole is no mean feat and it means a lot for Ugandan rugby and sport. Rugby is the fastest growing sport in Uganda and it has recruited a lot of success and it’s an opportunity for the game to excel and provide the next level for Ugandan rugby.”
The tournament will feature eight countries including hosts Uganda, Kenya, holders Namibia, Zimbabwe, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Burkina Faso.
Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe reflected on the tournaments.
“The journey started last year when we put in our bid for the games and a lot of requirements had to be fulfilled. I appreciate the government and Nile Special for supporting the game,” Kayangwe noted.
Utility back Calvin Gizamba who has recently captained the Uganda U20 before his senior national team call up believes the tournament is an opportunity for the team, “It’s an honor for Uganda to host the games and it’s a step forward in elevating our rugby journey in terms of funding, support, sponsorship and much more. I’m warming up to the coaches and the structures and it’s a good experience,” Gizamba stated.
The 2024 edition will mark the first time Uganda has hosted the tournament with Namibia having won a record 9 of the 18 titles and Uganda clinching the 2007 edition.
