The Cricket Uganda Men’s 50-Over League returns for Matchday Eight on Saturday with key fixtures lined up across the Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions, as teams look to strengthen their positions in the early title race.
The headline fixture comes in the Gold Category at Lugogo Cricket Oval, where unbeaten Tornado Bees face GM Sugar in a contest that could shape the top end of the table. Tornado Bees arrive in strong form after winning both of their opening matches and currently sit second, with leading run-scorer Roger Mukasa once again expected to play a central role.
GM Sugar, meanwhile, will be boosted by the return of Simon Ssesazi and Henry Ssenyondo, both of whom missed the side’s previous outing, a seven-wicket defeat to Kutchi Tigers. With one win and one loss from two matches, GM Sugar sit sixth and will be keen to close the gap on the leading pack.
The fixture also carries added intrigue given the recent history between the two sides. They shared results in last year’s UG20 competition, with Tornado Bees winning the first meeting by one wicket before GM Sugar responded with a 42-run victory.
In the Silver Category, Kutchi Tigers B host Wanderers at Entebbe Cricket Oval in a meeting between two sides looking to recover from recent defeats. Kutchi Tigers B fell to Ismaili Community in their last match, while Wanderers were beaten by Avengers, making Saturday’s encounter a key opportunity for either side to revive their campaign.
Another important Silver Category clash sees Soroti City take on Avengers at Florida Cricket Oval. Both sides come into the game with momentum after wins in their previous outings, and the result could significantly influence the standings. Avengers currently sit second with two wins from three, while Soroti City are fourth with one win and one no result from two matches.
At Serenity Oval in Kamengo, SKLPS face Nile in another match between sides seeking an immediate response after defeats last time out. Nile will be without their Rwandan internationals, including centurion Chris Yusuf Namuhoranye, though the availability of Jeff Mwesigwa Kasozi, Lenon Kangume and Steve Tusime offers a timely boost.
The Silver Category also features a top-versus-bottom meeting at GM Sugar Oval, where table leaders Ismaili face St John’s Mukono. Ismaili have won all three of their matches and sit comfortably on six points, while St John’s are still searching for their first points after three straight defeats.
In the Bronze Category, early pacesetters Kifaru take on Iganga at Jinja SS Oval. Kifaru have made an impressive start, sitting top of Bronze Group B with two wins from three matches, including a dominant 260-run victory over Centurion A in their most recent outing. Iganga, by contrast, have lost both of their matches so far and will be desperate to get their campaign moving.
With unbeaten runs on the line, table positions beginning to take shape and several teams already under pressure to respond, Matchday Eight promises another decisive round in the Cricket Uganda Men’s 50-Over League.
