Toyota to End $835 Million Olympic Sponsorship Deal After Paris 2024

Vehicle manufacturer Toyota is set to end its extensive sponsorship agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following the Paris Olympics in 2024.

This decision, reported by Japanese news agency Kyodo, marks the conclusion of a deal valued at $835 million, which commenced with the Pyeongchang Winter Games in 2018 and encompassed four Olympic events.

Sources close to the matter disclosed that Toyota was dissatisfied with the IOC’s allocation of sponsorship funds, asserting that the money was not effectively utilized to support athletes and promote sports. Despite these reports, Toyota has refrained from commenting, citing the privacy of financial details.

Toyota notably pulled its Olympic advertising in Japan during the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021, reflecting strong domestic opposition to hosting the event amid the COVID-19 crisis. This move signaled the beginning of a strained relationship between Toyota and the IOC.

The IOC, while not addressing the reports directly, confirmed that their agreement with Toyota extends through the Paris 2024 Olympics and highlighted ongoing preparations in collaboration with the automaker. Toyota is set to supply 3,000 fuel-cell vehicles for the Paris Games, showcasing its green technology.

Financially, the IOC relies heavily on income from sponsorships and broadcast rights, accounting for 91% of its revenue. In the last four-year cycle ending with the Tokyo Games, the IOC amassed $7.6 billion, with over $2 billion contributed by its 15 TOP sponsors, including Toyota.

Rick Burton, a sports marketing professor at Syracuse University, suggested that the IOC would likely secure another vehicle brand sponsor if Toyota exits. He emphasized the unique global reach of the Olympics, which provides unparalleled brand recognition.

The Tokyo Olympics were marred by corruption scandals involving local sponsorships and contract awards. Despite the official expenditure of $13 billion, a government audit indicated that the actual cost was potentially double. The IOC’s contribution to the Tokyo Games was approximately $1.8 billion.
