Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has named England and France as the teams to watch at the upcoming Euro 2024. Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Dijk expressed his excitement for the tournament and praised the strength of both squads.
“England has a very, very good team and squad, but so many other teams do as well,” Van Dijk said. “France are very strong. It will be interesting. I’m looking forward to it. It’s obviously next door as we say in Holland, so hopefully we have a lot of Dutch fans there supporting us.”
Van Dijk, who also captains the Netherlands national team, is set to lead his country in Germany this summer.
Liverpool’s contingent at Euro 2024 includes Dominik Szoboszlai, Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo. The club’s new manager, Arne Slot, will have to wait to work with these key players as they compete on the international stage.
Additionally, England manager Gareth Southgate faces the challenge of finalizing his squad for the tournament.
Southgate’s preliminary 33-man group features Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah, Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. While Alexander-Arnold is almost certain to make the final 26-man squad, newcomers Quansah and Jones may find it harder to secure their places.
Southgate will observe his players’ performances closely before making his final decision by 8 June.
