The Confederation of African Football is currently discussing plans to postpone the highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, scheduled to take place between July and August 2025 in Morocco to early 2026.
This was revealed by the General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Veron Mosengo-Omba on Wednesday evening.
It comes as a result of the new scheduling of the Club World Cup, which is set to take place from June 15th to July 13th, 2025, in the USA.
Mosengo-Omba explained to BBC, “We can play after the Club World Cup, but is this good for the interests of the players who have played all the season and then they travel to America to play and then immediately come to play AFCON?”
Many players from African national teams are expected to represent their various clubs at the expanded 32-team Club World Cup, which will even feature four teams from the African continent.
This poses a scheduling conflict, as these players would have had little time to recover and prepare for the AFCON tournament.
Morocco are hoping to use the tournament to showcase their rapidly-growing tourist industry and prove their ability to stage a major tournament ahead of the 2030 World Cup, which they are co-hosting with Portugal and Spain.
