Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has urged for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Following South Africa’s hard-fought 1-1 draw against Nigeria, Broos emphasized the significance of VAR in crucial matches.

While the match against Nigeria did not witness any glaring officiating errors, Broos stressed the importance of VAR, especially in games of immense importance like World Cup qualifiers. Currently positioned fourth in Group C with four points from three matches, South Africa faces stiff competition for qualification.

Broos highlighted the impact of VAR in enhancing officiating standards, drawing parallels with its successful implementation at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). He stated, “You saw that it was a good thing at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) because there were some decisions that you saw on VAR that they were not right or they were right. We are playing for the World Cup and I think in such a competition with such important games we need VAR.”

Despite acknowledging potential cost considerations, Broos underscored the pivotal role of VAR in determining match outcomes, stating, “Every competition game is with VAR, and it is important because one goal can decide if you go or don’t go to the World Cup. We need it.”
