We Are Ready to Fight for Our Country – Watenga

The Uganda Cranes are gearing up for a clash against Algeria on June 9, 2024, at the Namboole Stadium in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Fresh from their 1-0 victory over Botswana on Friday, the team is eager to build on their momentum and make a statement on their return to their home ground after a four-year absence.

With six points in the bag, Uganda is currently placed third in Group G, trailing Algeria and Guinea. However, a win against Algeria could propel them to the top of the standings. Coach Paul Put is optimistic about his team’s chances, despite acknowledging the daunting task ahead. “Algeria is one of the best teams in Africa, but we’re confident in our ability to give them a run for their money. We’ve got a strong squad and the right mindset to compete effectively,” he said.

Team captain Ismail Watenga echoed his coach’s sentiments, saying, “We know it won’t be easy, but we’re prepared to give it our all. We’ll fight for every ball and make it difficult for Algeria. We’re ready to make our country proud.”

However, Uganda will be without the services of Khalid Aucho, who is nursing an injury sustained during club duty. Algeria, on the other hand, will be missing several key players, including Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani.

The two teams have met before in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last year, with Algeria emerging victorious. But this will be their first-ever meeting in a World Cup qualifying match, and Uganda is determined to make history.
