Uganda’s national rugby sevens team, under the guidance of head coach Tolbert Onyango, has unveiled its roster for the upcoming Olympic Games Repechage in Monaco. This tournament, slated for June 21-23 at Stade Louis II, represents the last opportunity for teams to secure a coveted spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In Pool B, Uganda faces formidable opponents including Great Britain, Canada, and China. The team aims to rebound from a less-than-ideal performance at the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger Series in Munich, where they finished sixth. Key players Ian Munyani, Adrian Kasito, Pius Ogena, and Timothy Kisiga return to bolster the squad after missing the Munich fixture. However, notable absences include Isaac Massa, Desire Ayera, and Aaron Ofoyrwoth.
The men’s team comprises seasoned talents such as Ian Munyani (captain), Alex Aturinda, Philip Wokorach, and others. The three-day event will host 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams, all competing for the chance to represent their nations in Paris. Only the winners from each category will secure their tickets to the Olympic Games.
With high stakes and fierce competition, Uganda’s Sevens team, led by Coach Onyango, is poised to give their all in Monaco. The squad, supported by dedicated staff including physio Samuel Asiimwe and S&C coach Allan Otim, is determined to seize this golden opportunity.
