Euro 2024 Preview: Romania vs. Ukraine

The anticipation for Euro 2024 intensifies as Group E contenders Romania and Ukraine prepare to launch their campaigns on Monday afternoon at the Allianz Arena in Munich. This match marks the first competitive meeting between the two national teams, setting the stage for a compelling encounter.

Returning to the European Championship for the first time since 2016, Romania aims to make a significant impact. The Tricolorii have historically struggled in the tournament, with only one victory in 16 games. However, recent performances suggest a potential turnaround. Romania concluded their qualifying campaign unbeaten, securing top position in Group I with six wins and four draws. Under the guidance of Edward Iordanescu, who follows in the footsteps of his father, Anghel Iordanescu, the team has demonstrated solid defensive capabilities, conceding just five goals in qualifiers.

Ukraine, making their fourth consecutive appearance in the European Championship, qualified via the playoffs after finishing third in their group behind England and Italy. Despite a challenging history in the tournament, highlighted by eight losses in 11 matches, the team remains determined to raise morale back home amid ongoing conflicts. Managed by Serhiy Rebrov, a former Tottenham Hotspur striker, Ukraine’s journey to Euro 2024 included narrow victories over Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland.

Romania’s head coach, Edward Iordanescu, confirmed that the squad is almost fully fit, with left-back Nicusor Bancu overcoming a recent knock. The main selection dilemma lies in choosing the striker, with Denis Alibec, George Puscas, and Denis Dragus all contenders. Veteran goalkeeper Florin Nita, who has impressed in Turkey’s Super Lig, is vying to start over Atletico Madrid’s Horatiu Moldovan.

For Ukraine, the absence of first-choice left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko due to an ankle injury has prompted a reshuffle, with Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko likely to cover the defensive position. Premier League talents Mykhailo Mudryk and Viktor Tsygankov are expected to play crucial roles, with Artem Dovbyk, who topped La Liga’s scoring charts last season, leading the attack.

Despite Romania’s undefeated run in the qualifiers, their historical struggles in the Euros may persist. Ukraine’s attacking prowess, spearheaded by Artem Dovbyk, could tip the balance in a closely contested match. A 1-0 victory for Ukraine is predicted, securing three crucial points in their Euro 2024 opener.
