Denmark’s Christian Eriksen marked his return to the European Football Championship with a goal, as his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia on Sunday, 16th June.
It was an emotional moment when Eriksen, who had suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s EURO 2020 match against Finland in June 2021, found the back of the net in the 17th minute to put his team ahead.
The Manchester United’s midfielder’s resilience and determination to return to the international stage after such a harrowing ordeal was on full display as he chested down a pass from Jonas Wind and calmly slotted the ball home to put the Danes infront.
Denmark looked to be heading for victory, but Slovenia refused to go down without a fight. RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko had the first real Slovenian chance of the game, narrowly missing the target from outside the box.
However, it was Erik Janza who eventually found the equalizer for Slovenia, his deflected effort finding the net 13 minutes from time.
Sesko, the highly-touted young forward, continued to threaten, hitting the post with a superb strike from distance in the later minutes of the game. However, Slovenia were unable to find the winning goal, and the match ended in a share of the spoils.
The draw leaves both sides with one point after the opening fixture of Group C. Slovenia will play Serbia in their next fixture on Thursday, 20th June, while Denmark face England later that day.
